April and May: "You're Too Beautiful for Words" -  Vaughn recorded this song with the Larry Funk Orchestra in 1934. It is a fine sampling of the classically trained and youthful Monroe voice. It is featured this springtime as we cherish again the blossoms, the bird songs,

and . . .  Mothers. Thanks to Paul Hemmer - Radio Dubuque for sending this 78 recording to us! Be sure to check out Paul's blogspot for more vintage 78 sides:

May: Talent like his is rare.  "Dance Ballerina, dance." rings through my mind as I began writing this note.  He had the kind of voice that commands attention.  And, to have the song above still have the life and compelling artistry even now is an example of his art.  A great singer. One that is remembered and his songs are standards.  The real tragedy is that such men do leave us, and much poorer. Thanks for the honor of contributing something in a small way to the memory of this great man.

A TRIBUTE

SUBMITTED BY

E. HENDRICKSON, MD

EVEN THE BEST OF US GO TO GROUND. AS VAUGHN MONROE DID, MUCH TOO EARLY. HERE HIS LAST RESTING PLACE IS. HIS TOMBSTONE WEATHERED BY TIME. YET HERE HE DOES REST FOR ALL TIME. INTO THE FUTURE FOR UNKNOWN YEARS. UNTIL FINALLY IN THE FUTURE HIS MEMORY MAY FADE FOREVER. AS THOSE FUNERAL MONUMENTS FOR OUR SOLDIERS HAVE DONE. IF YOU WALK THE CEMETERIES OF ANCIENT LINEAGE YOU WILL SEE THE FADED NAMES AND DATED REMEMBRANCE OF THOSE NOW KNOWN TO FEW, IF ANY. AND YET THEY DID LIVE, LOVE AND LEAVE AND REST THEIR REMAINS JUST BELOW, NEAR, YET FAR, YET GHOSTLY REMINDERS OF OUR OWN DATE WITH THAT FATE ALL TOO SOON TO COME. IS THAT ALL THERE IS TO IT?  BORN, LIVE AND DIE?  NO ONE KNOWS BUT WE ALL HOPE THAT THIS IS NOT ALL THERE IS TO LIFE. VAUGHN MONROE IS HERE, JUST BELOW, NEAR, WITHIN SIX FEET, RESTING AND WAITING.  DIED SO LONG AGO. IN 1973, SO LONG AGO. 36 YEARS AGO. LOOK AGAIN AT THE NAME ON THE STONE, FADED YET STILL DISTINCT, LIKE OUR MEMORIES OF HIM. FIND HIS SONGS AND LISTEN, HE WAS GREAT. WE ALL REMEMBER HIM WHO KNEW HIS ARTISTRY, HIS SONGS, AND HIM. WE MISS HIM STILL.

We DO have HOPE --the very hope of Easter and the risen Christ--the first to be raised of those who have fallen asleep. (I Cor. 15:20) Claire

March through April: As we expect from Pittsburghers, Vaughn Monroe was a true gentleman and a man of immense talent as shown by his achievements.  Just the writing of his songs was enough for any man of music. But he had it all. Expertise on his instruments, even acting. We remember him and always shall. Yours: E. Hendrickson, MD

REMEMBRANCE: Today, May 21, marks 34 years since Vaughn Monroe passed away and left us with his music and a message ("Yield Not To Temptation.")

February through May: A DeLovely Confection. Vaughn Monroe recorded many Cole Porter songs. I have even heard that Porter was one of his favorite composers. Here is a selection ("What is this Thing Called Love") done in Vaughn's smoother-than-chocolate baritone.

Birthday Anniversary. Yes, October 7, 2005 is the 94th anniversary of Vaughn's birthday. We are pleased to have this website in honor of our maestro. We still love you, Vaughn Monroe!

Launching of the new website. The Vaughn Monroe Appreciation Society website has a new look. The information accumulating on the previous website was becoming unwieldy, and the site was becoming difficult to navigate. (I likened it to my "online scrapbook.") Lou and I both concurred that some revision in format and content was necessary. So here it is! 9/24/05
